SUNFISH SAILING RACES

CROOKED LAKE

TUESDAYS & SATURDAYS AT 1:30

Sponsored by the Crooked Lake Yacht Club

Open to Members & Non-Members alike!

Our 60th Year!

NEW & YOUTH SAILORS WELCOME!

Crooked Lake is has some of the best sailing conditions anywhere, and a wide variety of older and younger and new and youth sailors enjoy competing, learning and having fun during the twice a week summer races.

The races are open to members and non-members alike but all should sign in before racing (with a signature by a parent for participants under 18 years of age.)  A Learn to Race Clinics for novice racers will be held at the Club at 12:30 pm before the first race on Saturday July 5th  and others will be scheduled as requested.  Refreshments are provided and ribbons are awarded to youth sailors after most races at the CLYC Clubhouse.

While we generally follow the rules of sailboat racing the focus is on learning to sail and race and having a good time.  Racing experience is not needed to participate.  If you don=t have a boat or have guest and need an extra, call or email and we will try to find a loaner.

The starting line is between a race committee boat and a buoy in front of the Club=s dock next to Windjammer Marine in Oden. The course typically is around three orange buoys with the first leg into the wind (and usually toward the Graham Point buoy) the second in the center of the Lake toward the Minnehaha River, and the third off of Oden Island/Oden beach.   A 10 minute horn is sounded for the first race at 1:30 or so (if we have a wait a few minutes for stragglers), followed by 5, 3, 1 minute and GO horns.  (Horns for subsequent races start at 5 minutes.)  All participants assume the risks inherent in racing and sailing, safety boats and on-shore spotters are usually in place, and approved Personal Flotation Devices are required to be worn.  Please register if you want to compete for awards.  Depending on conditions, we try to have three races per day in a 2 hour time period.
