CLYC Newsletter
May
2010
Welcome back to “Summer 2010” on Crooked and Pickerel Lakes!
Calendar
Attached is the calendar for this summer’s activities. In response to your comments to the survey circulated in the winter newsletter, we have included a grill each Tuesday and Friday night, expanded the speaker series, scheduled three theme dinners on Saturdays, retained the Monday bridge night and Thursday ladies luncheons, and scheduled Wednesday game nights for the family. Sailboat races will continue on each Tuesday and Saturday. More detail follows.
Opening Breakfast
We will again host a breakfast with the PCLA, IWRHS, and AIG members on Saturday, June 26th from 10:00am to 12:00 noon. We had a large turnout last June and look forward to another one this year. The breakfast is a time to socialize and mingle with others who share the same passion for our lakes and local community, as well as serve as an information session. Ray McMullen from the PCLA, Mark Hill or Wayne Blomberg from the IWRHS, Greg Warner from the AIG, and Chris Weber from the CLYC will each give a brief update (no more than several minutes) on each group’s respective vision and mission, as well as accomplishments over the past year.
As in the prior year the breakfast will be catered by Next Door Neighbor Catering, operated by Jamee Fry. The breakfast will include omelet eggs (with bacon, ham, spinach, cheese), homemade English muffin toast, caramel pecan coffee cake, fresh seasonal fruit, orange juice, and coffee for a price of $7.
Reservations are appreciated in order to plan appropriately for the breakfast food. Please call Karen and Dan Plasencia at (231) 548-5656 or email Chris Weber at cweber55@fuse.net by June 21st.
Tuesday and Friday Grills
Pauly’s Restaurant will continue to cater the Tuesday grills, and Jamee Fry’s Next Door Neighbor Catering will provide the food for the Friday grills. We plan to serve not only grilled hamburgers, hot dogs or chicken, but we will substitute a variety of tasty entrée selections in order to keep your palette pleased! Of course we will also serve salads, chips, desserts and refreshments…all for only $7 per person. We request that members sign up to bring two appetizers per season to share. While reservations are not absolutely required for the grills, we will pass a sign up sheet to assist in planning for coming grills.
Bridge Night
For all our bridge lovers, we will again hold entertaining bridge games each Monday evening at 7:00pm.
Game Night for Kids
Each Wednesday evening at 7:00pm will be family game night starting July 7th. Bob “POP” Rupp has led us in some rousing 3-13 games and we are looking forward to this again. We can do other games as you wish.
Ladies’ Luncheon
Ladies’ lunch will again be held each Thursday at 12:00 noon. Lois Hughes and Jo Iles will host the lunches at all the favorite restaurants in the area beginning June 4th.
Sunfish Sailboat Races
The club will sponsor the Sunfish sailboat races each Tuesday and Saturday at 1:30pm, beginning Saturday, July 3rd. We encourage all members to participate in as many races as you would like. Come out and give it a try. Some members have graciously agreed to let others borrow their boats for your fun and enjoyment! The races are open to youth sailors as well as adults. Max McKinney will again be coordinating the races.
Youth Sailing School
At the time of this mailing, we are very close to purchasing a fleet of 6 Optimist (Opti) sailboats to initiate our sailing school for kids! We do not yet have possession of them and therefore have not set a class schedule, fees or have an instructor yet…but we are working on it. We know from your feedback last year and from your surveys that many members are very interested in a sailing school for their kids, grandkids, visiting relatives, friends and neighbors.
Opti sailboats are designed especially for kids, with a broad beam for
exceptional safety and stability. The boats are simple to operate - just one
sail, one line, and one daggerboard. The Opti is sailed in over 100 countries by over 160,000 skippers and it is
the only yacht approved by the International Sailing Federation exclusively for
sailors under 16. The Optimist is, quite simply, the dinghy in which the
young people of the world learn to sail. At the Beijing Olympics, 85% of medal winning skippers were former Optimist
dinghy sailors.
Boating Safety Classes
CLYC and the Pickerel
Crooked Lakes Association (PCLA) are co-sponsoring two Boating Safety Classes
this summer taught by the Marine Division of the Emmet County Sheriff’s
Department. The first class will be held on Saturday, June 19th from 9am-3pm in
the CLYC clubhouse and the second class will be held on Saturday, July 17th
from 9am-3pm also at the CLYC clubhouse. Please bring a bag lunch. Refreshments
will be provided.
Instruction includes a written exam, and a passing grade allows the participant to receive a Boater Safety Certificate. Concerning PWC, the certificate allows children ages 12-14 to operate a personal watercraft with a parent, who also must take the class and have the certificate. The certificate allows children 14 years and older to operate a personal water craft without an adult. The class will be free and open to the public. Reservations are required by calling the Sheriff’s Department at (231) 439-8900. Seating is limited to 40 participants for each class.
Golf Outing at Petoskey Bay View Country Club
Prizes, fun and friends! Petoskey Bay View Country Club is pleased to sponsor a golf outing for its friends from Crooked and Pickerel Lakes on Thursday, June 24th. The format is a 9 Hole Scramble with a 4:00pm shotgun start, followed by dinner. The cost is $43 including cart and dinner (with a cash bar)…for reservations please call (231) 347-3394. If you can’t join us for golf, come for dinner at 6:30pm. Dinner only (with cash bar) is $15…for dinner only reservations please call (231) 347-2402. Dress – appropriate golf attire.
Luck of the Irish Dinner
Mike & Mary Ellen Carraway and Jack & Geri Daly are hosting an Irish dinner for the club on Saturday, July 10th starting at 6:00pm. I am sure the dinner will prove to be a lot of fun as well as delicious. Please bring your entire family and your friends. Details will follow.
Titanic Dinner
Dave Kaplan will host a theme dinner based on the final dinner served aboard the Titanic. The date is Saturday, July 31st, beginning at 6:00pm. We all remember what an entertaining evening it was last summer when, as part of our speaker series, Dave proved to us that, yes indeed, he truly is an expert on the Titanic. Please bring your entire family and your friends. Details will follow.
Afterglow Dinner
By the middle of August members are starting to leave northern Michigan. We have scheduled a final Saturday night party for August 14th to celebrate the summer of 2010. Bring your favorite appetizers to share. The club will supply the wine and the desserts. Please come and bring your family and friends and let’s celebrate the “Summer of 2010.”
Speaker Series
Building on the interest generated last summer with our speaker series, Roger Winslow has assembled a fantastic line-up of speakers for this summer. The speakers will include David Crouse, a renowned film producer and interviewer to all living Presidents of the United States; Charlie Conn, an expert and historian of local railroads and hotels; Bob White, an expert who is a frequent speaker on shipwrecks of the Great Lakes; a representative from The Tipp of the Mitt discussing their recently completed Aquatic Vegetation Survey for Crooked and Pickerel Lakes; and our own members Rob Rupp and Dan Rupp. Professor Rob regaled us last summer with his talk on the Civil War, and will present another fascinating topic this year. Dan Rupp is an expert on Hemingway, and will challenge Rob to the most interesting presentation and who will draw the larger crowd. Sibling rivalry is great!
